Nailhead Pumpkin

Editor’s Note: This post was first published in October 2011.

I got the idea for this thumbtack-studded pumpkin from Gooseberry Patch Halloween (page 23) as well the blog Random Handprints. I love this look–it reminds me of nailhead-trimmed upholstery which is one of my favorite decor styles. My “studded pumpkin” is not quite finished yet because my thumbs are so sore, but I think it’s turning out pretty well, don’t you? I recommend doing this on a small pumpkin unless you have a lot of time, patience, and strong hands!

The studded pumpkin is a great crafting idea for children and adults, but I especially like it because I am absolutely terrible at carving pumpkins. I always see these fantastically decorated pumpkins, and I’m jealous of the more artistic individuals out there. Thank you for posting a craft that everyone can do!

Thanks for the shout-out! I recently read that a foam pumpkin from a craft store (I think they’re called funkins) make the tacking go easier, in case you’re creating one again this year!

Jon- that’s why I like it too- I am also terrible at carving. Anna, thanks for another good tip- it would be much easier on the thumbs if you used a foam pumpkin instead. I just saw those at Michael’s yesterday.
