Why We Haven’t Spoken More About the Autistic Newtown Victims

candles

A change of pace for today.  I know we have all been thinking about the tragic Newtown, CT school shooting and the many questions it brings up–including about both gun control and mental illness.

In the days after the tragedy, I noticed a trend in what we were hearing about (or, rather, what we were not hearing about).  Last week, I wrote this essay called “Why We Struggle to Honor Autistic Newtown Victims” and was honored that it was published at the Sisterhood blog at The Forward. Please do take a moment to read it and tell me what you think–I welcome your feedback.  For those of you have children with special needs yourself, please remember to visit my site Special Kids NYC, too.

Wishing you and your families a happy, healthy, and peaceful holiday and New Year.

Your essay was beautifully written. I shared your sentiment exactly. I cried when I read that Dylan died in his 1:1′s arms. Thank you for writing that beautiful piece.
